And the countdown begins! (Insert epic, intense music here...) The Big Game Week has finally graced us with its presence and many are gearing up for parties at their homes in Lantana. To ensure that your Game Day party is the best of the best this year, follow a few of these tips and your guests will be chanting your name on the sidelines.
1. Provide some fun Game Day crafts for kids AND adults.
That's right, all sides of the guest spectrum will have fun with easy crafts that everybody can enjoy doing together. Plus, craft time makes a great time to catch up with friends and family before the hooting and hollering begins.
Game Day Craft Ideas:
·Megaphones & Paint Pens - get megaphones in the two teams' colors (This year would be navy for the Patriots and red for the Giants or any color combo you choose...) and an array of colored paint pens. Let everyone design their own megaphone for some intense cheering action!
·DIY Pom Poms - This craft may be a little more fun for the girls, but by using basically much tissue paper and toilet paper rolls, you, your family and your guests can make their very own pom poms to cheer on their favorite team.
·Best TV Poster Contest - Okay, so you know when you're watching a football game and the camera hones in on a funny or clever sign that a fan has made? Well, why not set up a station with poster board, glitter glue, stickers and big markers so guests can create their own clever signs? Then, once they are made and before the game starts, vote on which one is the best and which one you think would get noticed by the camera man and award them a prize! (Or give fun, football-related prizes out to everyone!)
2. Fill the table with food and drink options for every guest on your list.
Since it's still early in the year, many people are sticking to their New Year's resolutions and a popular one is eating healthier. However, we all know parties around sports can bring out the unhealthier side of snacks - pizza, buffalo wings, etc. For this year's party, you can still make the traditional game day snacks, but there are ways to make them much healthier, like black bean quesadillas (which can also be good for any guests that are vegetarian) or healthier jalapeno poppers. Check out EatingWell for recipes of all of your game day favorites...only much, much healthier!
Also, instead of soda and diet soda, water, fruit and vegetable juices, sports drinks and iced tea make for healthier drink options.
3. Have a separate room to watch the game and a separate room for the kids.
The Big Game is, of course, a wonderful time to gather with family and friends, eat yummy foods and enjoy an afternoon together, but sometimes, for the younger ones at least, it gets a little boring. If there is room in your home, set up one room (probably closer to the kitchen so there is no shortage on eats) as the game watching room and another room as a room for the younger children to play and watch a show they'd like. If you have an older child that doesn't want to watch football either, offer them an incentive (like a few dollars or a night to the movies) if they want to babysit and keep an eye on all the little ones in the kids' room while the adults watch the game in the other room.
Do you have more tips on hosting the best Big Game party ever? If so, share with us on Facebook and Twitter. We'd love to hear your tips as we'll be talking about the Big Game all week long!

Trust us, we know Lantana moms are pretty much superheros because of all of the things they can juggle at once! Soccer practice, cooking dinner, keeping the house in order...seriously, the list could go on and on with the things moms do for the family. And, sometimes, there just isn't enough time in the day for Mom to get to do the things she wants to do - like perhaps a little trip to the spa or even working out!
Never fear, below, we offer some workout ideas for our busy (And amazing!) Lantana moms to squeeze in a little workout time at home while keeping everything under control.
1. The stairs are your friends.
If you live in a two story home, use your stairs (and nap time) for workout time in the home! Make dinner in a crock pot so you don't have to keep your eyes on it and run/walk up the stairs for a period of time. Just be careful and keep your eyes on the stairs when you're walking so you don't trip and fall.
2. Things in the kitchen can work you out, too!
You'll be surprised by the number of kitchen tools, and non-kitchen tools, that you can incorporate into your workout. If you've got two empty one gallon water bottles or two liter coke bottles, those can be turned into free weights. Fill them up with water or sand to create the amount of weight you need to work your muscles. Now, you can lift weights and cook dinner at the same time - talk about multitasking!
3. Crunches, push-ups, and planks, oh my!
There are many different ways to do crunches and push-ups that can benefit muscles all over your body. While watching your kids in the same room, you can easily do a couple of reps of crunches and push-ups. Hey, the little ones may think what you're doing looks fun and want to join in! Here are some ab workout routines from Fitness Magazine and Shape Magazine.
4. Don't forget to stretch!
After a good workout, it's always important to stretch. Put your kids' favorite show on the TV or get a board game started, plop down right next to them and stretch your body while they play.
What is your favorite way to exercise?

Cough, cough, sniffle, sniffle, some North Texans are suffering from the cold and allergy blues, but you and your family can keep allergies, colds and the flu at bay by doing simple things such as washing your hands after using a public restroom, heavily hydrating yourself and eating healthy, vitamin-rich foods.
In order to protect your family this winter in Lantana, follow some of these tips for a germ-free (and stress-free) season:
Tip 1: Hand Sanitizer Keychains
Pop these in your purse, your spouse's jacket or attach to your child's backpack so you can ensure cold and flu germs stay away from your family. While it's still very important to wash your hands with soap and water, for those moments you aren't near a restroom, but touch any object that sees a lot of "hand traffic", like public computers at school, library books or door handles, a squirt or two after touching items like these will help to eliminate germs.
Hand sanitizer and hand sanitizer keychains can be found at grocery stores, Walmart, Target, pharmacies, etc.
Tip 2: Healthy, Nutrient-Rich Foods
Cold and flu season runs from October through May so serving healthy, nutritious foods will keep your family feeling great and staying that way during these troublesome months. A healthy body means your family will be able to attack the cold and flu back and keep it away. Good foods to consume include: dark, leafy green vegetables since they are chock-full of vital minerals and vitamins, yogurt, as some studies have shown that eating a daily cup of low-fat yogurt can reduce your susceptibility to colds by 25%, and more.
And, don't forget to drink plenty of fluids, too! It is very important to keep your body hydrated with water and natural juices. EatingWell is a great resource for healthy recipes.
Tip 3: Physical Activity
It is very important to stay active not only during cold and flu season, but all year round, as it gets your blood pumping, oxygen flows better and a healthy boday can keep you're inside healthy during the entire season. When the weather is nice, Lantana has many outdoor amenities to take advantage of as well as the Central Amenity Center for an indoor workout.
For more ideas on keeping your family healthy this cold and flu season, check out this great article from WebMD.

Happy Friday the 13th! Whether you're superstitious about this day or not, we can't help but feel a little tingle knowing it's Friday the 13th, the unluckiest of days. So, to get you into the spirit, read on to learn five freakishly interesting tidbits about Friday the 13th:
1. While the number 13 has been unlucky to historians for years, many believe the superstition dates all the way back "to the 13 people who attended the Last Supper." (Fact)
2. The actual fear of Friday the 13th is called friggatriskaidekaphobia. (Say that 5 times fast!) The fear of the number 13 is called triskaidekaphobia, and "both Napoleon Bonaparte and President Herbert Hoover were infamously stricken with it." (Fact)
3. Many hospitals have no room 13, some tall buildings skip the 13th floor and many airports don't have a gate 13. (Fact)

If you're joining our community and moving into your new Lantana home during the next couple of months, get ready, January, February and early March can be some of the coldest times in Texas! While it does mean you'll have an easier shot at renting a moving truck or an entire moving team, don't let cold weather moving bog you down by using these tips below:
1. Before anything gets started, make sure your heat is working at your new home. You'd hate to walk into your new home, excited to start moving in your furniture and come to find out your heater isn't working! Double check that all units are working before you get started.
2. Much like working out outdoors, bundle up, but not to the point of sweating so much you give yourself the chills. Since you'll most likely be moving boxes in and out of the home and arranging furniture all day, lighter weight, but warm, clothing would be ideal to wear on moving day.
3. If moving day happens to be on one of those dreary winter days in North Texas (Which are always out of nowhere!), invest in A LOT of cardboard. Use large pieces of cardboard in entry-ways, exits and carpeted areas that will see a lot of foot traffic. Place it in areas where people will be walking to save having to clean up later.
4. Stock up ahead of time on cleaning supplies for moving day so you can clean any dirt, mud, leaves, twigs, etc. that accidentally get tracked into your old home and new home. You'll want to clean up any mess as soon as it occurs to avoid stains and so you can enjoy your new, CLEAN home!
5. If you're hauling any furniture or boxes in your car or truck, it doesn't hurt to prepare your vehicle for cold weather (and really any weather) as well. Lay blankets down for special pieces of furniture, fill your gas tank all the way up, make sure your heater and lights are working properly, etc. An extra tip for wintery weather: have extra jackets and an emergency kit easily accessible in your car in case the roads get bad or anything.
If you are moving to Lantana, let us be the first to welcome you and your family! We hope your move into our North Texas neighborhood is a breeze and you get hit with pleasant Texas weather for moving. And, don't forget to join us on Facebook and Twitter so you can stay in the loop with everything we have going on!

Soup, soup, soup! It's one of the easiest things to make when you've got a family on-the-go and, if one of your New Year's resolutions is to spend less, it can make for a cost-efficient lunch or dinner. Plus, when you make a big batch, there's usually plenty of leftovers to enjoy!
Speaking of soup, did you know January is officially National Soup Month? So, in this blog post, we're raising our spoons to that scrumptious thing we call soup with these four tasty (and simple) recipes below:
Beef & Pinto Bean Chili
A little spice, a little beef and a little bean make this Beef & Pinto Bean Chili recipe mouth-watering and tasty. If you're family is a big fan of spicy foods, this may be the perfect chili recipe for you this January. For those not keen on spicy dishes, try replacing the jalapenos called for in the recipe with a less hot pepper, like red or green bell peppers.
Hearty Italian Chicken & Vegetable Soup
A change-up on the old chicken noodle soup, this hearty, Italian version of chicken and vegetable soup is both good for the soul and good for the tummy as it's packed with all the best and healthy kind of vegetables. It's also low in sodium! This soup is a quick fix on a cold night for your family in your Lantana home.
Zucchini & Pork Soup
Mmm, pork and zucchini, what more could you ask for? All Recipes brings us this delicious and savory soup that would be perfect for a late night supper with the family and stored for leftovers for a yummy lunch at the office or school the next day.
Tortilla & Black Bean Soup
We don't know about you, but you can't forget tortilla soup when the weather gets chilly! This recipe from Martha Stewart calls for tasty black beans so you can ensure your entire family will be getting the protein their bodies' need. If you want a little added protein in your soup, add chicken breast or your family's favorite kind of meat.
What is your all-time favorite kind of soup? Do you have a great recipe to share with us? Let us know via the comments section or share with us on Facebook and Twitter. We'd love to hear and share your recipes!

There is no reason to stress over New Year's resolutions you know you won't keep. If there is a shred of doubt about a resolution you're planning to make, you most likely don't want to try to do it because there is a high chance of breaking it. Instead of overwhelming yourself, make this year's resolutions ones you KNOW you can keep! (Trust us, making a reasonable, attainable resolution(s) will make everything a whole lot easier on you.) Keep reading to learn just a few ways to choose attainable resolutions:
1. Just make one resolution. Don't overwhelm yourself with 20 differnt resolutions. That's too much! Choose one, maybe two, that you really want to put all your focus on for while. Then, as the year progresses, change up your resolution or goal and try a new one.
2. Keep it specific. Make your resolution as specific as possible so you know exactly what you want to achieve. If you have a specific goal in mind, it's much easier to stick to as well.
3. Set a realistic resolution. The holidays time can make everything seem a little overwhelming, so instead of trying to create a resolution too far out of your reach, keep it realistic, like taking the dog out for more walks or spending one night a week with just the family. The more realistic the resolution, the easier it is to keep.
4. Choose a resolution that works with your lifestyle. Make a resolution you know you can work into your life and lifestyle. For example, if you want to start working out more often but you're always with the kids, find a way to work it into your schedule. Walk up and down the stairs 20 times while your kids watch a movie. Invest in a treadmill and walk while your kids are taking a nap. There are many ways you can work a realistic resolution into your day-to-day life.
For more ideas on creating resolutions you can keep, check out this great article from Organic Gardening Magazine. Whatever your resolutions are for 2012, we wish good luck! What are you going to resolve in 2012?

Brrr! As the weather gets colder in Texas, getting outdoors gets a little bit harder. Don't let cold, winter winds keep you from enjoying an activity you love, like running or biking through Lantana's hike and bike trails. Even when it's 40 degrees out, you can still get outside and workout...just be sure you bundle up and follow the rest of the tips!
When running outside, a few parts of the body that get really cold really easy are your ears, neck, hands and fingers. Wear gloves, ear warmers or muffs and a scarf while you run. Since you don't want to be TOO hot (to avoid sweating too much that you get the chills), lighter-weight material would be a good idea.
If your running shoes are made with a lot of mesh, during the winter season, it may be a good time to invest in a sturdy, well-covered pair of tennis shoes. For those dreary days that you still want to get your workout on outside, thicker shoes will keep your feet warm and even warmer when paired with a thick pair of socks.
As for your attire, dress warmly, but not to the point that you'll be sweating so much you get a chill. A good rule of thumb from an article featured on Runner's World states it's best to "dress as if it is 20 degrees warmer...you should be slightly cool when you start.'"
Plan on running or biking in the dark? Wear reflective clothing so cars and other bikers and runners can see you. You can also attach a blinking light somewhere on your jacket or the back of your running/biking pants so you'll be even more visible.
Before stepping outside, warm up your body indoors. Warm up by walking on the treadmill, jump rope, run up and down your stairs a few times. Once you've warmed up inside and stretched a little, you should be ready to hit the trails. Also, be sure to stretch a lot after your run outdoors so you don't get cramps and won't be too sore the next day.
Another great tip from Runner's World is to make sure you change immediately after your run, especially if it's cold and rainy out. To avoid getting the chills, they suggest that you "change your clothes--head to toe--as soon as you can. Women need to get out of damp sports bras quickly. Put a dry hat on wet hair. And drink something hot."
Whether you're hitting Lantana's hike and bike trails or not this winter, we hope you stay warm and safe while outdoors. These tips can also be applied to a day outside doing yard work, construction, outdoor home maintenance, etc.
Do you like to workout outside during the winter? If so, do you have any other tips to share? Let us know on Facebook and Twitter!
